The exuberant Vamonos! (Spanish for “let’s go”!) and upbeat music seems to betray the deep spiritual yearning of the hit songs lyrics. Los Lonely Boys sing about longing to be saved from being lost in their self-made prison, the misery they find themselves in. They ask: “How far is heaven, Lord, can you tell me”?
The fact that the artists feel responsible for their troubles is not a popular notion. It is all too human to blame others for our circumstances. However, if we are looking for real answers, we need to begin at the beginning, honestly, truthfully, even though the truth may hurt.
Heaven—how far is it and how does one get there? We do well to think about it. Asking the question is part of the seeking.
Is heaven only for those who, as some allege, can’t make it in today’s world, who are so disappointed with life that their only hope is that something better, more fulfilling and of greater significance will come later?
If that were the case, people for whom everything seems to be going right in this world would not ask the same question. Their wealth, health and success has left them empty, longing for “something” more.
The good news is that there is a heaven where every longing within us will be fulfilled! Every sincere seeker can get there! But there is only one way! No one can buy, coerce or force his or her way into heaven. Following sincere religious practices or caring for the needs of others will also not get anyone to the desired destination. Our entry ticket can not be earned; it can only be received as a gift from God!
Los Lonely Boys got it right, they sing: “Save me from this prison, Lord, help me get away, ‘cause only you can save me now…”. They actually echo the words of the Bible, “No one else can save us. Indeed, we can be saved only by the power of the one named Jesus and not by any other person.” (Acts 4:12)
If you are looking for heaven, put your trust in the only one who can get you there! Don’t wait—do it today!
